If you're on OSX, right-click Chrome and "show package contents," then contents>resources. Rename the .icns you want to use as "app.icns", then use it to replace the one in Chrome's files.

If you're running Windows... You can probably google up an appropriate .png-to-icon converter.

Direct instructions:

You asked... this is exactly what I am doing with them:

I've been using it for ages and find the UI simplistic and easy to use.

2.Click "Get Started"

3.Click Browse, find the png image file. (By default it'll be here: "C:\Users\Username\Downloads\Chrome Icon Black MkII" with your username instead of username) Pick the blue one. Click Open

4. Click Export, then select the 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 options., as well as the original size option.

5. Click "Save As" put the file where you want it, name it want you want it, and add a ".ico" at the end of the file name.

6. Right click the chrome button on your desktop that you want to change.  Click properties then change icon.

7.Find your icon, double click it, then click ok on everything.  Tada!

You're welcome.
